First rule – eat where ethnics eat. Do not order spag-bol at an Asian restaurant. Do not order fish and chips from a Japanese restaurant. Do not order a bowl of pho at a metro cafe. The reason should be obvious. But I’ve seen restaurant’s and people surprise me on this.
Second rule – Once you have found a local haunt frequented by ethnics, scan the room and familiarise yourself with what they have ordered.
Third rule – If you you are able to stick to the first two rules. Order it. This means you need to leave your inhibitions behind and take an adventure with your palette. Order the chicken feet at yum cha. Order the bowl of Pho with tripe. Order the best peking duck at the best peking duck restaurant. Order the ginseng and black chicken consomme. Order the lobster Sashimi.
Now as you can tell, I’m Asian centric and was brought up as one in Australia. So I straddle both cultures. I count this as a blessing. If you want great honky-canto cuisine. If you are in Melbourne you will find it in Glen Waverley. You will also find authentic Taiwanese and Shanghainese food. For authentic Vietnamese look no further than Springvale, Richmond and Footscray.
