Life in Kenya – Vignette Number 5 – Kenyan polygamy and the fine art of huts

…continuing on from the Life in Kenya series from my anonymous travel wanderlust matee…

When you go up country everyone has their hut.  Everything is thought out.  The first wife has the largest hut.  She needs room for the daughters and goats so that they are safe at night.

Since they do not practice serial monogamy as they do in the west, the second wife also has a house, just not as big as she probably has less children.

By the third wife, the hut need not be so big but by now you have hut building down to an art.

By now you must have a separate hut for all the bigger boys so that too is organised.  However all these wives and boys can get to be just too much, especially as you don’t have a shed/garage to go to to have some peace, quiet and a beer for yourself so the best solution is to have your own hut so you can have a night off.

Of course you are not allowed in the husband’s hut so demands are accordingly.  Maybe these guys are on to something?
